Carbon Monoxide Compliance:
Nicole's Law (527 CMR 31.00) signed into law, November 2005 by Governor Mitt Romney.

What and When:
Install CO detectors on every habitable level including habitable portion of attics and cellars by March 31st, 2006. On levels with sleeping areas, alarms must be placed within 10 feet of bedrooms.

Whom is Impacted: 
Residential properties regardless of size, (i.e., 1&2 family, multi-family buildings, apartments, condominiums, townhouses that contain fossil fuel burning equipment or closed parking.

Allowed Types:
Battery powered w/ battery monitoring.
Plug in (A/C powered) units w/ battery backup.
A/C Primary  

Landlord Requirements:
Landlords must install carbon monoxide alarms in each dwelling unit. They must inspect, test, and maintain the CO alarms atleast once a year or at the begining of any rental period. Batteries must be replaced once a year.
